Disastrous Trends

There are many trends on TikTok, and despite how harmless they may seem, some absolutely disastrous incidents have occurred. To raise awareness of these dangerous trends, here are some that are starting to gain popularity that pose significant risks.

The Carolina Reaper is the world’s hottest pepper. (Westlandpeppers)

To start, we have trends related to the topic of food, which are labeled as “The Cinnamon Challenge,” “The Hot Pepper Challenge,” and “The Nutmeg Challenge.” Beginning with the Cinnamon Challenge, it is a challenge where a person is surprised with a spoonful of cinnamon being shoved in their mouth. While this sounds funny, especially with the reaction that is bound to come from such an action, it is very dangerous to do this. The person who has cinnamon shoved in their mouth may have a hard time breathing and have a high chance of choking due to the cinnamon’s dry texture and flavor. This can cause permanent damage to the lungs that cannot be fixed easily; a simple challenge is not worth that much. Continuing, we have the Hot Pepper Challenge, where participants eat a variety of peppers, typically including the three hottest peppers. The side effects of doing this challenge consist of stomach aches, headaches, and a possible hole in your esophagus. Lastly, in our food trend category, we have the Nutmeg Challenge, where the person eats a series of spicy nutmeg in an attempt to get high. Quite similar to drugs, the side effects can be hallucinations, a fast heart rate, vomiting, blurred vision, and even death. Although these challenges may seem entertaining, they pose serious risks to your and others’ health.

As of 2025, five people have already died from the Subway Surfing challenge. (NBC News)

Going on, we have our next category, which can jeopardize one’s life. While not all end in that way, they can pose serious threats to one’s life if the slightest mistake happens. These trends are known as “The Subway Surfway Challenge,” “The Blackout Trend,”  and the “Dusting Challenge.” To start, the Subway Surfway Challenge, where participants ride on a moving subway or train car. This trend has caused multiple deaths in New York and other cities, and as expected, trying this trend has an incredibly high rate of serious damage or death. Next, there is the Blackout Challenge, where the goal of two people is to see who will pass out first. By putting yourself in a chokehold, you have a high chance of damaging your spine, or worse, you may even have brain damage if put in a chokehold for too long. Obviously, this is incredibly dangerous and risks way too much for a simple challenge. Going on, we have the Dusting Challenge, where the participant inhales toxic fumes from computers, dusty corners, and unsafe areas. You can get seriously sick from this, and there is a chance for an electrical fire, as well as just damaging the computers. All of the trends in this category are incredibly dangerous to try, and you should aim to stay as far away as possible from these trends.

For the last category, we have the trends used for entertainment purposes mainly, yet despite how carefree they seem, they still hold just as much danger as the other trends. These trends include “Sunburn Art” and “The Orbeez Challenge.” Starting with Sunburn Art, it’s where the person, who usually isn’t allowed to tattoo themselves, sketches out an image on themselves using suntan lotion and then gets a burn. Despite the artistic point of view for how the art turns out, it comes with a serious burn and sometimes skin cancer. Lastly, there is The Orbeez Challenge, where the person uses an airsoft gun to shoot Orbeez at people. This may seem harmless at first, but it can be mistaken for an actual gunshot, and you can be arrested for doing it.

In conclusion, these trends can be very chaotic and dangerous, despite how entertaining they may seem to be. Try to spread around the consequences for these trends so people stop risking their lives just to do them, and remember, just because something may be trending doesn’t mean it’s okay, or that it’s safe.
