The Uprising of Bikelife

The Uprising of Bikelife

In the past decade, bikes have become very popular in the country, especially the state of Florida. E-Motos, ebikes, mountain bikes, BMX bikes (wheelie bikes or trick bikes), and (gas) dirt bikes are all very popular types of bikes that have taken over teens in America, especially South Florida.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking isn’t really “new.” They’re the type of bikes everyone wants for riding beautiful trails, or if you’re more of a dare devil, you might want a nice bike for riding fast trails and/or hitting jumps. Places like Jonathan Dickinson are great for biking trails and hitting jumps in South Florida.

E-Motos (Electric Dirt Bikes)

The type of bikes where you see people going fast down streets and alleys are E-Motos. Probably the most popular yet expensive form of bikes that people are obsessed with, E-Motos are an all around bike: they can hit jumps, they can ride dirt trails, they can wheelie, they can race, or just cruise.

Therefore, these are usually the dream bikes, also because they are the fastest type of bikes (other than motorcycles), most in between about 40 to 60 miles per hour, with some exceeding 70 with upgrades. The most popular types/brands of E-Motos are Surrons, Talarias, E-Rides, Rawrrs, and Stark Vargs.

E-bikes

The most affordable kind of bike on the market, if you’re going electric. They’re great for wheelies and combos (multiple tricks done on a bike during a wheelie) at a medium speed; around 20-30 miles per hour.

What also makes these bikes one of the top options for teens and adults is that they have pedals (with pedal assist), meaning they are street legal. According to HOVSCO, “Florida defines an eclectic bike as a bicycle or tricycle with operable pedals and a motor exceeding 750.” As long as the bike does not exceed 28 miles per hour, it has functioning pedals, and the rider is at least 16 years old, it is street legal, meaning it can be taken on roads, bike lanes, and paths without requiring any registration. Now, you don’t have to be 16 years old, but the bike cannot exceed 20 miles an hour instead of 28. Most popular types/brands of e-bikes are Super-73 and Macfox.

BMX Bikes

When you talk about BMX bikes, you could be talking about two different types of riders. The original, 20 inch BMX bike that people ride around skate parks, do all kinds of flips and tricks, it’s even an Olympic game! Then there’s the oversized, “wheelie bike” BMX bikes that come in larger sizes (26, 27.5, and 29 inch wheels). These are more designed for wheelies and combos.

Both of these models have pegs, a signature and crucial feature about BMX bikes, but the two models have different uses for them. The smaller, trick bike version uses them kind of like a skateboard, grinding on rails and giving you extra room to stand on. Wheelie bikes also use them to stand on, however during wheelies you can stand on the pegs and do combos, similar to how you would on e-bikes and E-Motos. The most popular brands of BMX bikes are SE Bikes, Mafia Bikes, Sunday, and S&M Bikes.
