We’ve finally done it again. After a very long 46 years, the United States men’s hockey team has claimed their gold. America has officially won their first Gold Olympic hockey medal since 1980 against Finland. The team was most known for beating the Soviet Union in semifinals, earning them the name of the “Miracle on Ice”.
Both our men’s and women’s hockey teams won in the February 2026 Olympics in Milano, Italy. Both teams arrived at the Olympics well-prepared and ready to fight for gold.
Men’s Hockey Team (2026 and 1980)

The 2026 Olympic men’s hockey team was composed of various NHL (National Hockey League) players, whereas in the 1980 games it was made up of a group of college kids. Back then, players would have to try out for the team and prepare for months leading up to the actual Olympics, learning each other’s style of play and how to work together as a team. They would play a series of games prior to the Olympics preparing for the real battles. Now, the “handpicked” NHL players will only get together for a few days going over various plays and making sure everything is smooth and well put together.
The men’s team has waited a long 46 years to win another gold medal. Forty-six years ago, in 1980, the gold medal and our domination that led to a win against the Soviet Union was a miracle for the young American team. The Soviet Union had won the Olympics 4 straight times before, making them the number 1 team in the world. To let alone beat them and then knock them out of the finals was near impossible. Nobody had ever done it before. The Soviet Union had an outstanding hockey team, and their players had been working together for years to know the every move of one another. If you scored on their goaltender (Vladislav Tretiak), you were told to keep the puck.
This year our men’s hockey team went undefeated in their 6 games played, showing us the real art of hockey. They went into 2 OT [overtimes], once in the quarterfinals to win against Sweden and again in the finals against Canada. We beat Canada for the gold in OT, making us win 2-1.
Women’s Hockey Team
The United States women’s hockey team had an outstanding performance in the Olympics this year. We entered the tournament ranked as the no.1 seed in Group A. They played a hard-fought total of 7 games, ending up with 7 straight wins and 0 losses. The team went into OT [overtime] in the finals against Canada (a tied game of 1-1). This was their closest match on the ice this Olympics, having blown all the other teams out of the water in their games before. The US ended up beating Canada 2-1 in the end, guiding us to our well deserved victory.
Finding the most fit players for this team is actually quite similar to how it was in 1980 for the “Miracle on Ice” team. USA Hockey will go watch hundreds of players (college, professional, World Championships, etc.) all year scouting the best players out there. The “scouts” will then invite those specific players to tryouts picking a smaller group that will be cut down little by little over a course of months to a max total of 23 girls. Over the course of many months, the team will usually go play in other tournaments leading up to the Olympics. The team goes and plays in the numerous tournaments to get used to playing with one another and see their competition in action. Those final 23 players picked will go on and be the final set roster for our Olympic team.
After some long treacherous years, both teams have rightfully won their gold again. One team was waiting longer than the other, striving to get another gold medal under their belt.
