Vaping has surged in popularity, especially among younger people. It’s often believed that it’s a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes, but that’s just not true. The reality is, vaping still carries its own health risks, and they shouldn’t be ignored.

People who vape are often exposed to different chemicals and toxins. Vapes contain harmful substances such as diacetyl, which has been linked to serious lung diseases. These diseases are caused by cancerous chemicals and heavy metals like nickel, tin, and lead. People who vape have an increased risk of getting diseases like bronchitis and pneumonia, and are prone to coughing and wheezing. In serious conditions, lung injuries associated with vaping can lead to hospitalization and even death. Vapes are highly addictive and can lead to severe lung and heart diseases after long periods of use. “Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving. Nicotine is a toxic substance. It raises your blood pressure and spikes your adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and the likelihood of having a heart attack,” Doctor Michael Joseph Blaha stated.

 

 

Impact on Mental Health

Vaping also affects your mental health. As I’ve stated before, the nicotine in vapes is very addictive. When you vape, it will appear as if it makes you feel good for a little while, but it is soon followed by mood swings, like feeling depressed. Mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and increased stress are all common after vaping. According to PubMed Central, “Suicide attempts were significantly higher among e-cigarette users compared to non-users. E-cigarette use was associated with depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempt.” This shows the mental health risks associated with vape use. It’s important to raise awareness and promote resources for those facing these kinds of challenges. Additionally, addiction can impair learning and memory, making it difficult to concentrate and learn. It also disrupts the brain’s “natural reward system”, which is important for experiencing pleasure and satisfaction. People who vape will find it harder to enjoy the things they once did.

 

Secondhand Vaping

Others around you can be harmed by the output of your vape. Many people think the vapor that is released is harmless water vapor, but it still contains the same harmful substances, even outside the actual vape. This poses risks to non-smokers, especially children, pregnant women, and people with health conditions like asthma. Children exposed to secondhand vaping may have an increased risk of respiratory issues and other health problems as they grow older.

 

Alternatives to Vaping

Choosing healthier alternatives to vapes is a great way to manage stress or maintain a healthier lifestyle. Some different things you can do are: engaging in physical activities to raise your mood and improve your health, practicing meditation to help you develop better strategies for managing stress, exploring different hobbies, spending time with friends or loved ones, taking part in different activities, going for simple walks, eating fruits and vegetables, and staying hydrated. These are all calm activities and lifestyles that can help you enjoy yourself and stay healthy! If you’ve already vaped but want a better alternative, consider chewing gum or eating candy to replace the taste of a vape with the real thing. If you feel like you can’t hold back on trying to hit your vape, research shows that taking a cold shower helps, as it regulates your mood and releases dopamine. These alternatives to vapes can lead you to a happier and healthier life.
