This year, our school has elected Enrique Alonzo Gonzalez as student council president, and he has big things in store for the students! Enrique ran for president with a clear plan: to make the school better and raise the students’ school spirit. He and his team plan engaging events, such as the spirit weeks, which are when you get to dress up for fun themes!

He has an even more exciting goal, hoping to bring back the Mariner Bowl, a huge event that older students may remember. Enrique’s overall goal is to motivate the whole school community and make this year unforgettable. While many would think being in this leadership position would make him stand out, Enrique feels exactly the opposite. “I am just like everyone else – just a student.” He knows he has an opportunity to bring spirit to JMS and wants to use his platform to do just that.

While Enrique is the president, Ms. O’Keefe has taken the new role of advisor this year. She explains, “I was inspired by the work [Ms. Vanderwalker] accomplished last year and the positive impact it had on students. I want to continue building on the initiatives she started and further strengthen the role of the student council in our school.” She has high praise for Enrique, explaining that he’s fostered a collaborative environment. Having his skills as president has already made a difference. She notes, “Right now, the students have been working on a spirit week for Valentines Day week.” Along with Ms. O’Keefe, Enrique and his team will definitely make this year amazing and have the students look forward to the activities they are planning.
Beyond spirit weeks, Enrique aims to host different activities once in a while like the school-wide Rock Paper Scissors we held in December! “We like to organize fun activities and see the students participate!” Enrique explains. So next time you see Enrique around school, share your ideas and thank him for bringing spirit to the halls.
