Awareness is the First Step: Join The Fight Against Human Trafficking

January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Since 2010, people have been raising awareness about human trafficking, educate the public on how to spot it, and encourage action to fight against these crimes. It’s a time to learn signs and strengthen community relationships to prevent exploitation.

Human trafficking is the illegal act of transporting or coercing people in order to profit from their work or service, usually in the form of forced labor or sexual exploitation. Each year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked world-wide even right here in the United States. It can happen in any community and victims can be any age, race, gender or nationality. Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery.

Approaches Used by Traffickers

Traffickers usually operate under false pretenses like legitimate businesses or relationships. This makes it challenging to recognize traffickers’ true intentions. They adapt their tactics to exploit new technologies and social media, often targeting individuals through online platforms and individual networks. Groups of  people may not be aware of the signs or the existence of traffickers  in their area. This makes awareness and public education extremely important. When people are informed and observant, they can better understand the small warning signs and efforts to prevent trafficking before it happens.

Traffickers are known to use these methods to lure victims into being trafficked:

  • Violence
  • Manipulation
  • False promises of well-paying jobs or education
  • Romantic relationships
  • Creating debt bondage
  • Isolation and control
  • Confiscating identification documents
  • Using substance abuse
  • Online grooming

Traffickers look for people who are easy targets for reasons like:

  • Psychological or emotional vulnerability
  • Economic Hardship
  • Lack of a social safety net
  • Natural disasters
  • Political instability
  • Age
  • Substance Abuse issues
  • Immigration Status
  • Social Isolation
  • History of Abuse

How are teenagers impacted by Human Trafficking?

According to the Department of Homeland Security, human trafficking is a serious issue for kids and teens regardless of their background, family circumstances, or where they live. There are things you can do to help protect yourself and others from becoming a victim of trafficking, which include learning about the signs and how to protect yourself online, learning how to report instances of human trafficking and learning how to get help and find support services.  If you want to learn more or need services or support, here is a list of national and local resources:

(Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches)

Is this something I really need to worry about here in Palm Beach County?

The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) had data on human trafficking of minors in 2024. 93 reports of human trafficking of minors were received. There were 25 verified cases of commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) and 3 verified cases of labor trafficking of children. Florida also ranks #3 of all states in the United States for incidents of human trafficking and Palm Beach County ranks #3 out of all Counties in the state for suspected cases of human trafficking.

The Human Trafficking Coalition of the Palm Beaches is a local organization that empowers youth and communities in Palm Beach County with education and tools to prevent human trafficking. In 2024, the Palm Beach County Human Trafficking Task Force provided services to 109 victims of trafficking. Of those helped, 5o were minors. The majority of this group was female (97), while 11 were male.

Many people do not recognize the signs of human trafficking and consequently, opportunities to rescue victims and hold traffickers accountable are passed over. Learning more about human trafficking and spreading awareness allows victims to be identified sooner and helped. This allows traffickers to be held accountable and ultimately creates a safer community for us all.
